The Ceiling Is Still a Work in Progress

When I started painting up here, one thing felt almost obvious. There had to be a moon. Lunaré comes from lunar – the moon – and re, rebirth. And because astrology has always been a big part of my life, the sun came quite naturally too. I wanted the light to spread through the room and become part of the lamps, the textiles and the clothes.

But lately, other things have started appearing.

I dream about signs, symbols and animals, and afterwards I feel the need to paint them onto the ceiling. I don’t always understand why. And maybe I don’t need to understand all of it yet.

The scarab is one of them.

When I turned 30, I had an Egyptian scarab tattooed on my shoulder. I have 13 tattoos, but this one has taken on a different meaning over time. Astrologically, around the age of 29–30 we experience what is called our Saturn return – when Saturn returns to the position it held when we were born. Saturn is associated with responsibility, boundaries, discipline, maturity and some of the lessons in life we might not necessarily have chosen for ourselves.

And a lot certainly happened in my life around that time.

Among other things, it marked the end of my substance abuse. And somewhere in the middle of all that, I had my scarab tattooed – an ancient Egyptian symbol of transformation and rebirth.

Today, somehow, I feel more connected to Egypt than I ever have before. I don’t fully understand why yet. I just know these symbols keep appearing, and for now I’m letting them find their way onto the ceiling.

Some of it has meaning. Some of it is intuition. And some of it is simply because I find it beautiful.

And yes… painting a ceiling is much harder than I imagined. Head tilted back, arm stretched above me and a tiny brush in my hand. But little by little, the room is starting to take on a life of its own.

A little glimpse while it’s still becoming. 🌙
